Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs Unit Study

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs by Judi Barrett
*We have seen the movie, but this was the first time we have ever read the book.  It was really cute and like the movie, makes you hungry!

Instead of buying their groceries at a store, the people of Chewandswallow get their food from the sky!  Everyday breakfast, lunch and dinner rains down from the clouds.  All is well until the weather takes a turn for the worse!

Unit Study

Five Food Groups
To make it fun, I had Kiley go into the kitchen, pick out food that we eat and take a picture of it.  I printed out the pictures and used them to show the different food groups.  We divided each food into it's group and made our own food pyramid.

She's still learning what food goes in which group.  We play games with the pictures and it's really helped as a visual learning tool.

Clouds
We read about the Cirrus, Cumulus, Stratus and Alto clouds and saw what each looks like.  Then Kiley made her own clouds out of cotton balls.

It's been so long since I learned about clouds that I had forgotten all about their names and which was which.  So even I learned something!

Tall Tale
Kiley wrote a tall tale story about 3 princesses and their encounter with love sick froggies.

You can read it at this link:
They Don't Like The Froggies

Meal
We re-read the book and Kiley picked out a meal that fell from the sky to make for dinner that night.  Kiley picked pancakes.  So we had made pancakes and it was pretty yummy.  Breakfast for dinner!

Compound Words
This website http://www.homeschoolshare.com has a compound word card printout.  You cut out different shaped cards to connect two words together to make one compound word.

Get Some Goodies.....
There is a cool new shop in downtown Ogden called Sweet Pop'n Cafe that sells specialty flavored kettle popped corn and old timey candy for a penny!  Kiley and I had fun trying all the different flavors like, nacho cheddar, Cinco de Mayo and chocolate marshmallow, just a few among their many selections.  We ended up getting a mixture of chocolate and nacho.  And then a bag of candy. The people who work there are super nice and we will deff be going back!  Click to check out their FB: Sweet Pop'n Cafe

....And Watch The Movie!
We love the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs movie!  We all go around saying quotes from it.  So of course, we had a family night, ate our goodies and watched the movie.

It's such a cute movie.  It doesn't follow the book to a T but you'll find a lot of influences from the book in the movie.  The movie shows how it started raining food and then craziness ensues.  If you haven't seen it, go rent it!

They Don't Like The Froggies

a tall tale by Kiley

There are three princesses.  Princess Kiley, Princess Greydi and Princess Bella.  They get all dressed up and go to a dance party.  On the way there it's raining puppies!  The princesses get out of the truck and the puppies are bonking them on the head as they fall from the sky!  There are puppies everywhere and are so cute that each of the princesses keep one.  They get to the dance and it's raining froggies!  The froggies try to kiss the princesses because they want true love.  But the princesses don't want to kiss the froggies, so they scream and run away.  The princesses get home and lock the door and look outside.  The froggies are outside!  The froggies open the window and climb inside!  The princesses grab some nets and catch the froggies.  They put the froggies in some water and cover them in ice.  The froggies try to push up and out but can't and they freeze!  The princesses make the frozen froggies into popsicles and sell them to the Goblin King.  The End.

This week we read the book, Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs.  Part of Kiley's school work was to write a tall tale.  As you can see she drew a picture for her story; the three princesses selling their froggie pops to the Goblin King.  I think Kiley is on her way to being a Brother's Grimm style storyteller.

Raw Cacao Granola

Raw Cacao Granola Recipe

Ingredients:
Cacao Powder
Almonds
Dates-Pitted
Flax Seed
Shredded Coconut
Goji Beries
Raw Honey
Blender

Put almonds in the blender and chop up fine so it looks almost like a corn meal.

Take the dates and cut them in half.

Take the cacao, flax seeds, goji berries, dates and shredded coconut and add to the almonds in the blender.  Chop until dates are tiny chunks.

Add a big glob of raw honey and blend.
The dates and honey help the granola stick together.  If it looks too crumbly you can add more dates or another glob of raw honey.

It should start sticking together when it's ready.

Take granola out of the blender.

I sometimes put mine in a glass jar and eat it right out with a fork or I smoosh it down into a container and cut out chunks.

I like having granola on hand because I get hungry in between lunch and dinner and this snack fills me up without having to eat very much of it.  We also take granola chunks hiking.  The goji berries and flax seeds give you a good energy boost!

Cacao has more antioxidant flavonoids than any food tested so far, including blueberries, red wine, and black and green teas.  Cacao beans are rich in a number of essential minerals, including magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, zinc, copper, potassium and manganese.

Anandamide - Anandamide is known as the “bliss chemical” because it is released by the brain when we are feeling great. Cacao contains both N-acylethanolamines, believed to temporarily increase the levels of anandamide in the brain, and enzyme inhibitors that slow its breakdown. Promotes relaxation, and helps us feel good longer.
